When a child is diagnosed with a medical condition, families are often overwhelmed by medical jargon, unexpected expenses, and uncertainty about what comes next. Jack’s Helping Hand helps ease that burden by providing assistance with gas, food, and lodging so children can get to their appointments, families can stay together, and parents can focus on what matters most—their child.
Our Assistance Program is available to any family in San Luis Obispo County with a child under 21 who has medical needs.

Every month, we highlight a child to share the stories of the wonderful children we support in our community. February also marks American Heart Month, raising awareness of heart disease and heart defects. This month, we’re honored to introduce Rosie!
Rosie was born prematurely at 33 weeks, requiring an extensive NICU stay at Valley Children’s Hospital. She was diagnosed with Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), along with a congenital heart defect known as VSD. She was also born with Long Gap Esophageal Atresia, which required a G-tube to be placed shortly after birth. Because she weighed only 3 pounds at birth, Rosie had to wait six months in the NICU before undergoing open-heart surgery. Shortly after, she was transferred to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital to have her esophagus repaired and was finally able to come home at around 10 months old.
Today, she follows up with 10 different specialists at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital for her medical care, and Jack’s Helping Hand has provided support through travel assistance and coverage of multiple hotel stays. This support has allowed her family to focus on her health without the added financial stress of managing numerous appointments throughout the year.
Now 3 years old, Rosie is thriving at home! She loves playing with her older brother, is currently learning how to use her medical walker, enjoys long stroller walks, and loves her homemade purees.
Rosie’s journey is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of the children and families we are honored to support each day.

Jack Ready Imagination Park benefited from the skill and creativity of students in the BioResource & Agricultural Engineering (BRAE) program. Working in teams, students completed hands-on improvement projects that directly support the park’s daily operations. Two teams designed and fabricated custom-welded stall latches and sand barriers for the barn, enhancing both safety and functionality. Another team built a custom shelving unit for the equestrian center’s equipment shop, improving organization and efficiency behind the scenes. We are grateful to these students and the Cal Poly BRAE program for their time, talent, and commitment to supporting the Imagination Park!

As we step into 2026, we want to honor the remarkable boy at the heart of everything we do—Jack Ready—and to celebrate a meaningful milestone: 20 years of Jack’s Helping Hand.
Diagnosed with a brain tumor at a young age, Jack faced obstacles that required specialized equipment and constant support to communicate, eat, and experience childhood like his peers. Through Jack’s journey, the Ready family came to understand the heavy and often unexpected financial burdens placed on families caring for children with cancer and special needs.
After Jack’s brave three-year fight ended in 2004, his story did not. His life became the foundation for something greater. What began as a family’s determination to help others has grown into a nonprofit that, for 20 years, has been dedicated to supporting families facing similar challenges, made possible by the generosity of an incredible community.
As we enter our 20th year, we are proud to continue carrying Jack’s legacy forward. In the months ahead, we look forward to sharing the stories of the children and families we serve.

To our devoted community: your compassion continues to change lives. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being the cornerstone of our mission.
As we look back on 2025, we are proud that we have upheld our fundamental mission of serving children and families throughout our local community for the past nineteen years. Our Assistance Program now provides monthly support to more than 80 children, ensuring they can access the specialized pediatric care they need. We remain unwavering in our commitment to removing or reducing the financial strain of travel costs for families already facing the daily complexities of caring for a medically fragile child. We also continue championing programs that give our children opportunities to participate in adaptive activities, share in moments of laughter and happiness, and simply enjoy being kids.
Our Imagination Park’s Equestrian Center continues to flourish, with the Little Riders Program thriving in its exceptional facility. We’re thrilled to announce that Phase 2—our inclusive playground—is becoming a reality! Thanks to your incredible generosity, we will be ordering the playground equipment with an installation goal for 2026, bringing us closer than ever to our vision of a fully accessible park for all children. Your support, including the success of our 14th Annual Imagination Park Fall Classic golf tournament, has made this dream tangible.
This year’s Annual Celebration and Barbeque at Santa Margarita Ranch once again reminded us of the remarkable community that makes our work possible. Together, we’ve witnessed countless moments of genuine compassion and human kindness. As we reflect on nineteen years of service, we’re deeply grateful for your constant support. Every milestone achieved, every family assisted, and every dream brought to life flows directly from the generosity of friends like you who embrace our vision.
-Paul and Bridget Ready
