Little Riders

Little Riders Scholarship Program

Little Riders is an adaptive horseback-riding program that is specifically designed for children with physical and cognitive disabilities ages 4-21. Equine therapy programs have been shown to help improve balance, strength, and coordination, resulting in increased mobility, independence, and overall function in a child with disabilities. Our program focuses on the benefits of working with horses and horseback riding.

Classes take place weekly at the Imagination Park Equine Center in Nipomo. Lessons are led by Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) registered therapeutic riding instructors and a team of trained volunteers. Together, they create an encouraging setting where children can experience the miracles of working with horses.

Why Therapeutic Riding: BriDGET Ready's Story

When Bridget’s son, Jack, was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor at just three months old, their world was turned upside down. As he grew, Jack struggled with his balance, and “all he wanted to do was go on walks,” Bridget recalled..

Jack’s doctor, Dr. Bravo, recommended equine therapy as a gentle way to develop strength and coordination. During those early sessions, Bridget rode tandem with Jack on the back of a horse, holding him close as they moved together. The steady rhythm of the horse brought Jack a sense of peace. Bridget remembered how relaxed he became, often falling asleep peacefully in her arms. For Jack, the movement of the horse gave him something his own body could not yet do: the feeling of walking. In those moments the frustration and limits he faced seemed to fade, replaced by a sense of possibility and hope.

What happened was nothing short of a miracle. With a warm smile, Bridget remembered, “After a few lessons, Jack was able to walk with his walker.” Even at such a young age, she could see the pride shining through him.

Witnessing the impact equine therapy had on Jack during such a fragile time changed everything for Bridget and her husband, Paul Ready. Inspired by their son’s journey, they felt called to create a place where other families could experience the same healing, comfort, and hope. In 2024, that vision became reality when the Jack Ready Imagination Park Equestrian Center began offering therapeutic riding lessons. The program, called Little Riders, is funded by Jack’s Helping Hand and offered at no cost to families, removing barriers when support matters most. For parents and children alike, these lessons provide more than therapy. They offer moments of relief, deep connection, and a renewed belief in what is possible.
