Every month, we introduce someone Jack’s Helping Hand has assisted so you can hear about the wonderful people that we help in our community. This month we would like you to meet Juniper!
Juniper is a spunky, joyful 7 year old. She is the youngest of five kids and adores all her siblings. She loves playing Legos, attending school, and swimming in her Grammy’s pool. She prefers to be called by her nickname, Juni.
Juniper had a stroke in utero, which caused complications and a difficult delivery. She was born not breathing, jaundiced, and had feeding challenges. Her mom started noticing things that just seemed off. At 6 months old, Juniper was not meeting physical milestones. At 9 months old, an MRI confirmed a diagnosis of Left Hemiplegia Cerebral Palsy. By 3 years old, it became evident that her stroke had affected her speech and was diagnosed with Apraxia of Speech.
Juniper’s medical needs were too great for comprehensive care on the Central Coast, so she started seeing a specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Juni was prescribed medication and received Botox injections to relax her spastic muscles and, for the first time, began sleeping an entire night, pain-free. She has an AFO to help with stability and walking. She sees Neurology, GI, and OT specialists through Rady for other needs.
Shortly after Juni’s first visit to Rady, her mom learned about Jack’s Helping Hand— “The long trips to San Diego multiple times a year became an easier experience. Jack’s financial support for gas, food, and lodging eliminates financial stressors, making the trips easy, smooth, and even enjoyable.”
